#BigBeacon Twitter chat – Sept 30 – The Need for Whole Engineers

Five years ago, I (Pamela Rogalski) was working as an industry engineer, managing risk, and only considering community impact in volunteer work and over beers after the end of the end of the work day. I saw a growing need to integrate community impact work and engineering design work and co-founded a community of professional working at the cutting edge of this emerging practice.

I look forward to chatting with you about the industry’s need for whole engineers, that is, engineers who have the skills to act with integrity regarding their holistic impact on communities. This need is fundamentally driven by the increasing requirement for social licence to operate, the industry term for gaining community permission to undergo a project. A loss of social licence can result in popular protest and may cause the end of a project; there is a growing need to manage this project risk with integrity.
