It’s likely that this transformative experience motivated you to pursue your work. We’ll explore strategies to enhance courses and make these types of experiences more likely for students.
Thursday – 10:30-11:30am
Facilitators: Jeff Evans (Purdue.edu) & Dave Goldberg (ThreeJoy.com & BigBeacon.org)
Short description: One of the key shift skills (don’t call them soft skills) is the practice of listening. Listening is so commonplace that we scarcely give it any attention, but deepening our listening is one of the surest ways to improve our leadership, our collaboration, and our general effectiveness with others. In this interactive workshop Dave Goldberg & Jeff Evans collaborate to help participants deepen their listening by combining methods drawn from the toolkits of professional musicianship and executive coaching. In the first half, participants are asked to listen to rhythms and music. In the second half, participants listen to each other at two different levels of awareness. Participants are asked to reflect on the experiences and draw more general conclusions from both sets of experiences.
Thursday – 11:30am – 12:30pm
Facilitator: Mark Stephens (Penn State Hershey Medical Campus)
Short description: Teacher Identity Formation (TIF) is an ongoing, integrative process underlying faculty experiences in education as they learn to ‘think, act and feel’ like an educator. Since each teachers’ process of identity formation is an individual, internal, and emotionally charged unconscious experience, it can be difficult to understand each faculty member’s unique experience as they move from student-teacher to tenured faculty. Historically, reflective writing has received the most attention as a means of exploring identity formation processes and development. We propose that mask-making is a form of reflective expression that can provide insight into TIF.
